  1. What Project Management & Invoicing/Accounting tools does everyone use?

I'm curious what Project Management and Invoicing and Accounting tools everyone is using, especially since this forum seems to have a very internation crowd?

I use Basecamp and have developed an import utility called ChronoPipe to take the time entries from it and import it to QuickBooks for billing and other accounting functions.

I've noticed in other forums that some people use a separate invoicing system (such as Blinksale) from their accounting system, but I've tried that and couldn't come up with a workflow that suited me and my accountant.

What's everyone else doing? Are there any other online tools that you find indespensible to your freelance work?

  2. I have a rather simple setup. I used Basecamp for a while, but then it was just not worth it. To allow for client interaction I use Trac for my projects, or my clients already use it. I track my time with TimeLog, I write my invoices with Pages, and track them with a simple OmniOutliner document. To track my personal todos on a project I'm using fabulous OmniFocus. Notes, thoughts and customer information I put into VoodooPad, my personal wiki.

That's basically my list of tools I use for day to day project work.
  3. For project management, I use Basecamp. It's clean, easy to use, has all the features I need, and interacts with my other 37signals accounts. For invoicing, I just use Microsoft Word that way I can make custom "themes" instead of using premade templates. Blinksale is pretty good for invoicing though.
  4. Basecamp for me here ..... find its the easiest tool to use for the time being.
  5. Up until now I have been using Outlook and good ol' manilla folders, but after some discussion here I have installed activecollab and might start using that for my clients and flagging tasks that need completion. It seems really good.

I use MYOB and have a bookkeeper and accountant that check things -- they cost money, obviously, but are worth every cent you pay. For example, my bookkeeper taught me about how foreign exxhange losses and gains can actually offset and is claimable -- that alone, with constantly rising Aussie dollar, is invaluable!

I do still need to find some good time tracking software though! All the good ones seem to be OSX
  6. I just started using Fanurio today. It's basic and simple. $39 one-time fee. (much cheaper than the subscription stuff) Local on your machine.
  7. @dajovion That is a pretty good program. I think I might start using it. The only thing I think could be better with it is the design. It's a little plain.
  8. @travislopes,
Yeah, Fanurio isn't the prettiest program in the world, but I'm liking it's functionality so far. I like how you can create your own invoice templates for it to push the data in to. I should be able to make .pdf files from the generated html invoice. Could be a good time-saver. I like my invoices to be branded.
  9. Project Management: RedMine

    Invoicing: Bamboo Invoice

    Accounting: GnuCash

Todo lists: Emacs (Yes I am an Emacs junkie!)

    Contacts, Proposals, Documents: Open Office

All are Open Source and free.

  10. Wow, good post!

I use Open Office spreadsheet for my accounting, (I only do about 2 projects a week so spreadsheets are easy.). Invoices I use Open Office word processor.

for Project management I use Media Wiki, this allows me to use whichever format I desire and keeps a history of all my changes.

Todo lists, Calendar and contacts I use qtopia desktop as thats what my pda uses.

as edavis10 I also only use open source tools, saves me and therefore my clients bundles.
